If you are currently dealing with an off-grid system, you should know that there are many different ways that you can generate power for your local distribution needs.
Generators have, for years, been the primary choice for power demands of any size. And as recent technologies have progressed and emerged, renewable energies stored in a battery system have become available to the public.
But here’s the catch: the efficiency of renewable energy is, to this day, rather unpredictable and very difficult to rely on. Consistency is not, and never has been, a strong selling point for renewables. Not to mention - committing to renewable energy will generally demand a high investment cost with the risk of a poor ROI.
So... instead of debating which is of the two is best, can’t we just combine them?
As with most things in life, there are pros and cons to each solution. Let’s compare the good and the bad when it comes to powering with generators, and powering with batteries:
Good news for generators: generators are reliable, will power on exactly when you need them to and do not rely on a secondary type power source (such as wind, solar tidal, etc).
The not-so-good news: generators will still create emissions - and as we’re striving toward building a greener, cleaner future, let’s face it: this isn’t particularly conducive to those goals.
Good news for batteries: batteries are “clean” and are capable of storing a large amount of power to be discharged as needed.
The not-so-good news: batteries do require an outside charging power source – which may or may not be so “clean”, after all.
Considering the above it’s only natural to ask ourselves: “Why not combine generators and batteries?”
And it really is that simple. You can use the generator during peak demands as it is reliable and, if sized properly, will meet your community’s demands. During off-peak hours, you can use some of the “free” power from the generator to re-charge a battery storage system.
During low demands (nighttime), you can discharge the battery system to maintain your grid and shut down the generators altogether - therefore eliminating multiple hours of emissions!
